볼로디미르 젤렌스키 우크라이나 대통령이 2022년 3월 16일 화상으로 미국 의회 상하원 합동연설을 하였다.
젤렌스키 대통령은 러시아와의 개전 이후 정식으로 미 의회를 상대로 정식 연설에 나선 것이다. 이날 연설에서 러시아의 우크라이나 침공을 9·11 테러에 비유하기도 하였는데, 우크라이나 영공을 비행금지 구역으로 설정해달라고 요청했다.
이날의 하이라이트는 단연 젤렌스키 대통령의 16분 연설이었다. 연설의 초중반부는 우크라이나 언어로 연설하였으나 후반부에는 직접 영어로 연설을 하며 참석한 상하의원들을 감동시켰다. 참석 의원들이 마지막에는 기립 박수로 큰 호응을 보여줬다. 이에 대한 화답이었을까. 바이든 대통령은 즉시 9800억원을 지원하기로 결정하기도 하였는데, 아래는 실제 영어 연설문 내용이다.

Glory to heroes. Thank you very much. Madam Speaker, members of the Congress, ladies and gentlemen, Americans, friends, I am proud to greet you from Ukraine, from our capital city of Kyiv, a city that is under missile and airstrikes from Russian troops every day.

And in the end, to sum it up, today — today it’s not enough to be the leader of the nation. Today it takes to be the leader of the world, being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace. Peace in your country doesn’t depend anymore only on you and your people. It depends on those next to you and those who are strong. Strong doesn’t mean big. Strong is brave and ready to fight for the life of his citizens and citizens of the world. For human rights, for freedom, for the right to live decently, and to die when your time comes, and not when it’s wanted by someone else, by your neighbor.

Today, the Ukrainian people are defending not only Ukraine, we are fighting for the values of Europe and the world, sacrificing our lives in the name of the future. That’s why today the American people are helping not just Ukraine, but Europe and the world to give the planet the life to keep justice in history.
현재 우크라이나 국민은 우크라이나만 수호하는 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 유럽과 전 세계의 가치를 위하여 미래라는 이름으로 우리 삶을 희생하며 투쟁하고 있습니다. 바로 이것이 미국 국민들이 우리 지구의 삶과 역사에 정의를 지키기 위해 우크라이나 뿐만 아니라 유럽 그리고 전 세계를 돕고 있는 이유입니다.
Now, I am almost 45 years old; today, my age stopped when the hearts of more than 100 children stopped beating. I see no sense in life if it cannot stop the deaths. And this is my main issue as the leader of my people, great Ukrainians.
